What I’m Grateful For: Integrity (part 2 of 2)
Out of integrity: does this mean something that is missing a part that is integral or fundamental to its intended operation? Or something that is just missing something, period?
It’s an interesting discussion. A truck that is missing its tailgate can still drive, so if that trucks purpose is to get you to work, it still has integrity in that regard. However, what if you need to haul your recycling? Without a tailgate, the truck does not have integrity as a vehicle to haul stuff places. And as an investment in terms of its resale value, this truck is certainly one with less ‘wholeness’ than a similar truck NOT missing its tailgate.
When I work with people, I face this kind of situation often. I have to decide, for my team, what kind of weakness or lack in a team member is fundamentally out of congruence with their effectiveness in their role. And the answers are not cut and dried.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. In most of my research, it’s most useful to try to know and identify both your strengths and weaknesses, then ideally play to your strengths, and try to shore up your weaknesses or admit them to everyone and recruit help.
For example, some of my team are not morning people, they are night owls. If we were a coffee shop that opened at 4am, a night-owl might be not a good choice. But we are a tech and creative company, and I’m a night-owl myself, so for our team, this is workable and not a compromise of integrity.
What does this way of thinking about integrity mean to you? Wholeness in terms of function or purpose…. What does that mean for you?
What I’m Reading: This week, I’m reading a real classic: The Effective Executive by Peter F. Drucker. This book is CRAZY good, even though it was written in 1967, it is one of the best books I’ve encountered on management and leadership. Incredibly practical and not theoretical, I highly encourage you to read it. One note: clearly in 1967, female executives were not common – the entire book is written in the masculine, which takes a little getting used to. However, it’s worth it in spades – a fantastic read.
