What I’m Grateful For: Principles – or maybe, Rules to Live By
Now I’m sure that we could get in a big discussion of what a Principle is versus a daily habit or a standard or a value – and I think that there’s a lot of ways to examine this. But for today, I mean Principles as in daily, life-structuring and work-structuring non-negotiable rules that I have chosen to live by. I probably have some deep, more general paradigm principles that guide my life, such as wanting to be the best person I can possibly be, or treating others with compassion. But today I’m just talking about Principles as specific rules I use to keep my life at a certain level of structure and growth.
I just started looking at this recently, so I’m still in draft mode.
But here’s a few to share:
- • Live with daily, intentional gratitude;
- • Eat whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible and eat dinner together as a family;
- • Prioritize quality sleep over pretty much everything (this one goes against a lot of advice out there, I know! But sleep for me comes over exercise, extra busy work, etc and it stabilizes my metabolism and my mental acuity significantly, I’ve found);
- • Meditate twice a day;
- • Learn something new every single day;
- • If there’s something I’m afraid of, get it out in the light where I can see it and address it head on;
- • Know that I’m not always right;
- • Know I’m not always wrong;
- • Courage to be afraid and take action anyways;
- • Kaizen – daily, incremental improvement has a compounding and profound long-term effect – which means in short, I have faith that my small daily actions will eventually create big impact.
If you notice, the first four items make the rest of them possible. Without having the gratitude mindset, quality food for fuel, plenty of sleep and my 2x meditation practice, it’s very difficult for me to nail the rest of the list every day. So while you might not think of “getting lots of rest” as a life principle to live by, I feel that if it in turn enables you to live by the REST of your principles, it should score pretty high!What about you? What I’m Reading: 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson! Rule
#11: Do Not Bother Children When They Are Skateboarding.
Whew! That chapter was intense. And while I totally agreed with it, I’m going to give you my own version of essentially what I think Peterson was saying, and let you read his own words for yourself. Partly because he delves deeply into gender and archetypes and symbols and culture, which is something I truly think needs an entire book dedicated to it, not just a chapter here. It’s just too much to do justice to without a lot more background.
Back to this. Ultimately, what I believe what Peterson was saying is distilled in the wisdom and clarity of the Stoic philosophers and outlined quite beautifully in (yes, another) book that I’m reading now titled, “The Obstacle is the Way.” By choosing to see, embrace, even look forward to our obstacles we can understand them for what they truly can be: access to our greatest potentials to thrive and grown. The possibility of becoming an excellent, powerful and capable human being comes FROM the obstacles life puts in our way, not IN SPITE of them.
So greet your dragons, your challenges, your obstacles like the VERY THINGS that will make you more empowered, more clear, stronger and more capable. And never, every try to make someone else less able to face their own obstacles or tell them no when they are trying to achieve a difficult task – like… skateboarding. It is through the deliberate, tough, gritty and courageous determination to meet, greet embrace and overcome our obstacles that we come to define our best selves. So greet the challenge as what is is – the best opportunity yet, to become a better version of yourself.

What I’m Pondering: The Pareto Principle – also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity, states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.
