This week I’m going to start looking for the possibilities of being grateful for things that are generally considered “bad.” I’m not looking for ways to make the “bad” things good – I’m exploring the 180 idea that I mentioned last week, where we attempt to find the positive things that can be found if we look with an open, curious mind at things we generally dislike or try to avoid.
So – insomnia! Like many people, I’ve struggled with insomnia at times throughout my life. I hated it, don’t get me wrong! I suffered because of it and it was not “good” for me in any way….. but here’s a few small bright things that insomnia gave me:
Long quiet periods to think without interruption from kids, the phone, etc
Time to write and journal
Many piles of sketches and concepts for paintings
Remembering to pay almost-due bills in the middle of the night (better credit, YES!)
Lots of time looking at the moon
Hearing coyotes and owls sing

What I’m Reading:12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson. If you haven’t heard of Jordan Peterson, I highly recommend you check him out. He’s a wickedly intelligent thinker and will challenge your beliefs and your mindsets, no matter what you believe! I’m going to take my time with this book and share a little each week about it, if that’s ok with you.
Peterson explains his reason for writing this book in the Overture, a nifty little prelude for the rest to come. Essentially, we as humans are faced with alternatives of chaos (the absence of rules, anarchy, collapse of society, etc) or order (which in excess presents as intolerance, mindless adherence to rules and regulations, extremism, totalitarianism, dictators and tyrants.) The solution he presents is simple, but profound: a fierce commitment to personal responsibility and accountability, and an individual choice to live a meaningful and deeply considered life.
